The M-PAC project (Multimodal and Multi-Sensorial Perception for Autonomous and Connected Vehicles) addresses one of the most critical challenges in the deployment of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs): achieving robust, accurate, and reliable perception of complex driving environments. The project proposes an innovative approach based on multimodal perception by integrating data from multiple sensors both on-board the vehicle and embedded within the infrastructure (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure, V2I). By leveraging advanced deep learning techniques and sensor fusion, M-PAC aims to enhance situational awareness, improve traffic safety—especially for vulnerable road users—and promote the democratization of autonomous vehicle technologies by reducing the dependency on high-cost on-board sensors.

The project also incorporates collaborative architectures to mitigate limitations such as occlusions, sensor failures, and communication delays, while enabling efficient real-time decision-making. Furthermore, it explores the use of UAVs (drones) as mobile perception platforms and evaluates delay compensation techniques for reliable cooperative perception. M-PAC is structured into six work packages ranging from foundational research to pilot integration and validation, ensuring comprehensive technological development.

In alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and European initiatives such as Horizon Europe and STRIA, M-PAC aims to foster a new paradigm in intelligent mobility by developing scalable, inclusive, and cost-effective perception technologies for future smart cities. The outcomes are expected to have significant scientific, technical, social, and economic impact, including advancements in AI-based perception systems, improved road safety, and strengthened European competitiveness in the autonomous mobility sector.
